WotC AAM:WaS forumPlaying with RB's new experimental darkness rulesOur gaming club had 12 people show up for our monthly WaS game night last Friday. Wow! We had pre-announced that the games would be using RB's new experimental night rules. So we played a total of about 14 games using those rules. Plus at least one player playtested in advance. Overall, they worked pretty well but there were a few glitches.
The biggest 'glitch' was predetermining that we were going to use darkness rules. Because we knew darkness rules were in effect we all came with builds optimized for that. But in RB's rules we should technically have rolled a dice to determine if darkness rules were in effect. That allowed a few things to become pretty serious 'cheese.' We also restricted the (200 pt) games to the European theater which also had a bad side effect. The biggest problem was the Sparviero. By knowing in advance that night rules were in effect and by restricting to the European theatre there was really no effective counter-balance to these bombers. Fighters are almost useless because they rarely 'find' the target and also crash on landing (a few people tried it) so the only counter is ship-based AA, and that is hobbled by a -1. Add that to the Sparviero's 5 armor and they ran wild and free all over the game and were virtually impossible to stop. If we had used the 'roll a dice to determine night rules' there probably would have been more 'hedging' in fleet builds to have more aircraft in the builds, but with the ability to swap out 25% of your points it is still likely the Sparviero's would rule the game. I also tried a couple of Halifax's. They did about the same as day rules since they already only hit on 6's (which is to say mediocre), but they are also almost impossible to shoot down. They also can't attack destroyers or PT boats (see next). One thing that is probably an 'accurate' and positive change is the utility of MTB/PT boats. They are harder to hit at distance, and their torpedo attacks are not affected 'in sector' so they get a better chance to do some damage. Almost everyone brought MTB/PT's in their builds. Overall, the surface gunnery rules seem to work fine, but I think the aircraft rules still need some work. Patrol bombers are too powerful and almost impossible to shoot down, or even abort. One possibility is to require patrol bombers to also do a 'search check' to tone them down. They could still land without a recovery check. Or maybe patrol bombers only fail a search check or recovery check on a '1'? Or maybe Sparviero's shouldn't be able to operate with night rules! :P Imperial Japanese Army LSDs - Set III?While doing some more reading and research on WWII units I stumbled across the LSDs (Landing Ship - Dock) that the Imperial Japanese Army built before and during WWII. I discovered these in 'Japanese Warships of WWII' by A. J. Watts.
The first ship they built was the Shinshu Maru. According to the book, this was the first warship in the world specially designed to carry landing craft and to launch them into the water. She carried 20 landing craft that were launched through large doors in her stern. She was completed in 1935. Dimensions are not given, but an illustration is in the book. She was 9,000 tons, could make 19 knots, and could carry 20 aircraft and 20 landing craft. Next was the two-ship Akitsu Maru class (Akitsu Maru and Nigitsu Maru). The IJA completed them in 1941 and 1942. They had flat-tops to fly off transported aircraft. They carried 30 aircraft and 20 landing craft. They were 11,800 tons and could do 20 knots. There is also a profile illustration of this class in the book. Some references refer to these as escort carriers even though aircraft could not land on them. They converted two more cargo ships along similar lines (Mayasan Maru and Tamatsu Maru) in 1942 and 1943. They were 7,000 tons, could make 21 knots, and each carried 20 landing craft, but they could not carry any aircraft. The final ship they converted was the Takatsu Maru in 1943. She was 5,000 tons and could carry 20 landing craft. The IJA tried to build two more groups of LSDs (Type "A" and Type "B"), but they were not completed before the war ended. So I think I have found our 'axis landing ship' for Set III to balance the Gunston Hall LSD. I suspect it will be either the Shinshu Maru or one of the Akitsu Maru class. The book said the Japanese went to extra effort to disguise the real identity of the Shinshu Maru by changing her name twice (Ryujo Maru and Fuso Maru.) Here is a more detailed online reference: http://www3.plala.or.jp/takihome/Shinshu.html The top illustrations are the Akitsu Maru at this site: http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita.../japan/lsa.htm Set III revelations for the B-24...It was reported that Rich Baker said we were getting a B-24 in Set III and alot of folks believe it's the B-24 Liberator for the USA, but I made an interesting discovery while I was doing some research to make my own prediction lists for future sets. I came across the Blackburn B-24 Skua, a british carrier based fighter/bomber used early in the war. This makes more sense since the USA already has two of the UC slots for the Allies via ships and this single engined aircraft would just take up a common slot for the UK, who need more carrier based bomber options as it is. I figured I'd put it here for discussion.
If Set IV was the last setI never did post this over here. A member of the Forumini board challenged me to come up with a Set IV if I was Rb and was told by WotC management that it would definitely be the last set. So here it is. Let me say from the very beginning that "I DON'T LIKE IT." :(
After coming up with a 'dream team' of seven sets this was a really difficult exercise. I am assuming I have the same 40 unit set limit as Set III. I think the absolute main goal of a 'final set' would be to fill out and balance the two sides as much as possible. I don't mean they have to be identical, but they do need to balance. There also remains the basic rule (I assume) that each set should be able to stand on its own if a player only had the units in that set. So there has to be a 'balance' within the set for subs, aircraft, and ship classes as well as between the Axis & Allies. I did this in the Set III to VII exercise too but I make one exception: I allowed the Allies to be slightly over half the total units. This is mainly to accomodate RB's inclusion of the Soviet Union and acknowledging the fact that the Allies had much larger navies than the Axis overall. You will need to look at what I assume is in Set III in the 'Set IV to VII' thread. So here it is. Set IV - the 'Armageddon' set. ;) Set 4 if it was the last set. Commonweath 1. Of course the N1K4 'George' is a 'must have' to get the IJN back in the air game. I did load three IJN carriers in there also to make up for lost ground on Set II. I am not personally that excited about the Hyuga, but a lot of board members frequently comment on the desire for a hybrid. The RO-103 is there to give the IJN a low point sub. All of the fighters I added are to give the different countries basic air cover. I thought the RN absolutely had to have their MTB's. But I had to compromise and use a reprint. At this scale who would really know? I filled out the Soviets because RB started it in Set III. With only four sets I could have easily done without the Soviet navy. But what is done is done. So I decided to at least finish it with a workable set of units. And the Arkangelisk can be proxied for her Royal Navy sisters. I also wanted to finally get the Kormoran in there for the Syndey's SA. I think most of the other units are self-explanatory. Many of the 'new sculpts' could easily be something else with so many choices. But I think this creates a fairly balanced 'final' set of units for the game as a whole. Very difficult indeed. Online WAS CampaignTake a look:

Jameson Defensive Armament QuestionQuick question on Defensive Armament. I had a look through the FAQ and didn't see anything on this specifically. Defensive Armament gives a +2 armor when attacked by fighters - is that just a +2 to Armor,*or* a +2 to Armor and Vital Armor as well. I'm assuming the card is meant to be read literally and its the former, but clarification is welcome.
Thanks. War at Sea Set III to be called 'Flank Speed'Amazon.com as always is the first official leak on Set III. It will be called 'War at Sea: Flank Speed.' Price is the same as Sets I and II at $14.95 US. Sale date is June 9, 2009. Synchronize your watches!
http://www.amazon.com/War-Sea-Allies...62 87&sr=8-22 WAS MasterlistI've decided to repost this since I cannot change the thread title of the older post. Any updates will be made to the list in this portion of of the thread through edits where I'll simply cut and paste the list on my computer over top of this one. My bold, italic, underlined text did not carry over as before and have been translated into plain text. Sometime in the future when I feel updates are less wide spreed across the list I'll fix this to make the list as easy to read as it is on my computer.
************************************ This is an Axis and Allies: War at Sea master list Ive been compiling for the different ship classes of World War II. This will always be a work-in-progress, but it is being created to give myself and others an idea of what still can be added to the game. Motor Torpedo Boats are listed for actual numbers of individual boats where class numbers were possible, not by the two boats per game piece equivalent. Aircraft carriers are placed between the two different carrier sections based on how many aircraft they carried. If the source I used said an aircraft carrier carried less then 40 aircraft, it was placed in the escort carrier area. Some of these might be rare anyways threw creative SAs or might even have two carrier slots anyways. *Denotes a class we already have. Ships of a same class, but a different nationality are not counted as the same class. The numbers of ships we have gotten, or are going to get, include units from Set I and Set II, plus confirmed units for Set III. Behind the class are the ships of that class that we have. USA Battleships include those sunk at Pearl Harbor. Where possible, ships that changed hands upon commissioning are only counted towards the operator, otherwise there is a crossover effect of numbers via class. Ship classes can and do span between nationalities. Unfinished ships, aka Fantasy Ships, with the exception of the Aquila and Graf Zeppelin, are not on the list. There are far too many real WWII ships that were completed to be worried about unfinished ships for the moment. Let the game designers make those decisions, and hope they never do. Another member came up with back art and I take the blame for the front 'pocket' art. The shirts will be a medium gray-blue. The weird thing is we are paying for three colors, but the 'colors' are black, white, and gray. Well, it is a battleship after all. It has taken over a month and we will finally be making them in a week or so. I just wanted to show it off. I think it will be really AWESOME! :)
Back art: Front 'pocket' art: New to Game - Larger Board, Fortified IslandsI just got into the game in the past month, and have adapted my game for a more realistic battle.
Has this forum ever covered the following: Playing on the entire floor of your house, apt, etc... rather than the board? The quick concept being that each game space equals one foot, so you play with a 1' ruler and a 3' yard stick to measure out movement and range. The full detail involves line of site, range, stacking (basically none), how to handle airplane range, etc... Fortified Islands - Or Island destruction as an objective: After watching "Midway" one night, I just had to make a scenario for that battle, where the island had various objectives to destroy, with their own armor ratings, attack abilities, etc... I used the Monopoly hotels and houses for the targets. Hidden Submarine movement - Basic premise is you don't know where a sub is until it strikes, then there are rules for how to keep it exposed to fire, but also how it can lose its pursuers. And if anyone plays in the Baltimore/DC area, let me know! More realistic ship statsOver a year ago there was a gentleman that posted a link to revised ship stats to print and some revised homemade rules. With the new set out I was wondering if anyone revised the stats for these new ships. I don't remember the posters name but the revised ships stats and a handful of rules changes made the game much better. Some examples of his rules changes was removing some of the gamey SA's and making smaller ships harder to hit by both air and sea. He also corrected some range discrepancies for various ships. Thanks.
Weedsrock2's revised Sets III though VII - Yes, SEVEN!I have gotten so much good feedback on this board and the Forumin board on my Set III through Set VI 'fantasy lists' I realized I could probably squeeze out seven sets. Plus I have fixed a few errors that were very nicely pointed out to me. And I appreciate that.
So here is my revised Sets III through VII. This has allowed me to pull in a lot more 'uncommon' and 'common' ships and aircraft that a lot of folks wanted. However, be aware that I had to dig even deeper into 'fantasy' ships to get enough rares to make this happen. So don't complain with your mouth full. ;) (I'm looking at you Enabrantain!) Rich, feel free to submit this to management anytime. :D I did not change Set III, but here it is again for reference: Set III Commonwealth *1. The USS New JerseyI made this earlier tonight, thought it might make for some interesting game play in larger games. The USS New Jersey did in fact bombard at least one Japanese airfield in her war career.
Some good news from RB's blogThis was in response to a question of weedsrock's about whether or not there would be set III over on RB's blog:
We're well into the sculpting phase of War at Sea III, so there's every reason to have confidence in the set's appearance next year. Sculpting and tooling (that's mold-making) are places where we're committing real dollars to the set, so if we had any concerns at all about whether we were going to go forward with it, we'd put the brakes on now. On the bright side, oil's gotten a *lot* cheaper in the last couple of months. That's going to help things along, I hope. Weedsrock's Set III through Set VI checklistsOkay Rich, BasicBob (on the Forumini board) and I have 'decided' it is possible for you to do at least six sets of WaS using the 40 unit configuration of Set III. So I have decided to help you out and I have put together the configurations for sets III through VI. All you have to do is add the SA's and you are good to go!  :D
So the following posts are my personal choices/guesses for WaS sets three through six. As BasicBob and I have established, we believe it is possible for RB to make four more sets (through set VI) using the Set III configuation of 40 units with about 31 new sculpts. The ration of commons:uncommons:rares must be 16:8:16 to satisfy the current packaging. That would mean 12:6:12 ratio of new sculpts. Sets I and II also had about 20% aircraft. So my sets follow that percentage. The constraint on the ultimate number of set is the number of unique capital ships. With 12 new unique sculpts needed per set you run out of them after six sets. This is a very hard exercise! I promise myself to never do it again. ;) Each set has at least one Axis and one Allied submarine, and I did my best to make sure each side has at least a usable number of each ship class (DD, CL, CA, CV, and BB) and aircraft (fighters and attack planes). There are just barely enough capital ships (BB, CV, CA) to get through Set VI IF some unfinished/unbuilt 'fantasy' ships are included. I tried to keep most of them in the later sets, but it was not completely possible. The really hard part was deciding what commons and uncommons to 'give up.' So many possibilities. I also made sure each side had minesweepers, but I have my doubts about those. There are destroyer classes I would much rather have included. But I know there is some interest in these. I personally think minefields can be handled as a game mechanic rather than by using specific ships. That is why I decided to skip on minelayers anyway. So here we go. Enjoy. Scream. Complain. Praise. Rant. Dream. And all other manner of internet interactions. Feel free to make your own. RB will never be able to please everyone. I will start here with my "Set III" assumptions: Units with asterisks are confirmed (or strongly implied) by RB already. He has also said there will be 31 new sculpts in Set III. WAS Masterlist, still under construction, but here's what I got so farI've lost all of my bold, italics, underlined formatting. It's much nicer in wps form, but oh well. I figure it's time we get a clear look at what's really left to be made. This list is still under construction, I'm working on Italian ships/subs right now. Aircraft will probably be the last thing I work on, those are tricky thanks to variations.
************ This is an Axis and Allies: War at Sea master list Ive been compiling for the different ship classes of World War II. This will always be a work-in-progress, but it is being created to give myself and others an idea of what still can be added to the game. *Denotes a class we already have. Ships of a same class, but a different nationality are not counted as the same class. These numbers include units from Set I and Set II, plus confirmed units for Set III. Behind the class are the ships of that class that we have. USA Battleships include those sunk at Pearl Harbor. Where possible, ships that changed hands upon commissioning are only counted towards the operator, otherwise there is a crossover effect of numbers. Ship classes can and do span between nationalities. Unfinished ships, aka Fantasy Ships, with the exception of the Aquila and Graf Zeppelin, are not on the list. There are far too many real WWII ships that were completed to be worried about wasting my time on empty hulls and unused blueprints. Let the game designers make those decisions, and hope they never do. USA SHIPS Battleships / Battle Cruisers: *Iowa Class (2/4). USS Iowa, USS Missouri. *South Dakota Class (1/4).
