remaking everything into 15mm scale?

20. November 2008 - 16:18
Hi everyone. I am new to the world of AAM. I am just now getting into it. I have almost complete sets of the 1939-1945 and North Africa and intend on buying the upcoming Eastern Front.

My question is;

Are the smaller scale minis from the older sets going to be remade in new sets? I don't want to go out and buy boosters of the old stuff if they will be reissued in new releases with updated cards?

I don't want any of the older vehicles in the smaller scale, but everything else I'd love to get some (e.g. Marines, obstacles, etc.).

Also, is there any talk of a Pacific Theater set coming up?

Thanks!

Suggested Rule Change

How about mines can not be deployed anywhere on the map but, only in a hex adjacent to one of your units. Especially now without the 15 unit build limit. It is silly to have your tank all of a sudden surrounded by a mine field on your side of the battle front.

I hear at least the Germans are getting an engineer type unit to finally deal with barricaded roads and the pop up mine fields.....

Graph Corps NEW Map Pack Review - Solomons and Gazala

18. November 2008 - 1:10
I phoned my FLGS last week to see what kind of deal I could get on 5 cases on the upcoming Eastern Front set plus two of the EF map packs. He requested that I phone him back in a few days for the price but mentioned that he did have some new AAM products in stock. New AAM products? What?

He pulled the new stuff up on his computer and told me that they were the new Solomon Island and Gazala maps packs by HBFronts. Since I work 15 hour days most of the week, my first chance to go to hobby store was on Saturday. After spanking TA in a game of Conflict of Heroes, I was out the door. Plus he had some things to do here in town anyways.

Ok, to get to the point, I bought one of each. Each pack has two identical maps that fit together along the long edge. The Gazala map can fit together pretty well along the top part where the city is, making it a larger city that can be assaulted from both sides. The Solomon maps fits well at the top too but there will be two hexes along the boarder that only has terrain along a hex line - think hedgerow terrain. I think that the beach on the SI map can be made into a nice big river to cross.

The maps are "regulation size" and are alot thicker than the WoTC issued maps. They appear to be very durable. The envelopes that they come in are like WWII "secret document" envelopes and have the leaders of that battle's signature and HQ stamp. There's even some historical background to the battles that the maps are supposed to be for. I think that Vaughn did a great job with these. Each pack goes for $20.

The only thing that disappointed me was that there were no scenarios or bonus markers inside although each pack contained a large piece of white cardboard to keep the maps straight - or is that for a DYI set of markers?

I did see the website and it appears that Vaughn will have map specific scenarios and other support. Vaughn has always been a BIG supporter of AAM and I'm thankful for him and his crew for doing the newsletter and all of its fun contents. Thanks guys!!!

I highly recommend these if you can find them at your FLGS. If not, order them online from you-know-who at you-know-where. ;)

Rear Armour

15. November 2008 - 19:59
So my buddy & I just finished a game and debated why a Sherman has a 5/4 defence, while the average German tank has a 5/3 defence.

I look up the Sherman M4 and see 51-12 mm front to rear armour.

I look up the Mark IV and see 80-10 mm front to rear armour.

I'm no engineer but what gives?

Soviet WWII posters

15. November 2008 - 11:04
Quote: Yeah that was how my Russian language Professor translated it for me. A couple people now have said it's the translation you have. *shrugs* I simply cannot be wrong here: Russian is my native language :)

Quote: Cyrillic script is cool no matter what it says. I'd say that the font used on that picture does NOT correspond to the fonts used on most Soviet posters. And, actually, the art and the words are much more important than the script. I've decided to reveal some posters to the non-Russians - just to feel the endless war against the dreaded Nazist scum, the war to the last man...

This is probably the most famous conscription poster. The upper line reads: "You Motherland is calling you!" The document is a military oath.

"We'll defeat and eliminate the enemy without mercy!"
The document Hitler is breaking is the Soviet-German non-aggression pact, signed in August 1939. Authors of this poster were condemned to death in absentia by Hitler himself :)

"A Red Army warrior, save us!"
Nazis shamelessly killed and enslaved thousands of Russian women and children.

"Strike to kill!" I'm sure you've never seen such posters printed in USA :)
You can see the previous poster on the wall.

"Hold Moscow!".

This poster was designed to inspire women. The upper line is: "Fascism is the worst enemy of women". The lower line is: "Everybody, rise to fight against fascism".

"We'll come to Berlin!" They really came!

And one final poster, without any words, just to keep the spirit of the war alliance:

You stat the unit: V-1 Flying Bomb

Is this even possible in the given scope of the game?
Is ol' Q way too drunk to even post this?
Have I done this before and forgotten doing such?

Size of 3" Map Collections solicitation.

14. November 2008 - 6:54
So here's my quandry.

My newest project I'm going to post to the public is the "Defense of the Tennenberg Line: June 29th 1944"

A remarkable Battle that takes place along a ridge line of three fortified rolling hills. I want to depict all of them but there is no way I can represent the terrain properly by useing particular maps only once. The 3" maps are a bit cluttered so I need to facilitate the reduced terrain maps more than once as well as a map that has a nice row of hills that matches closely my actual battlefield pictures and maps.

Do you folks have multiples of each map set or only a single copy? I really dont want to go to the extra work of publishing the scenario if there will be a limited player base that can take advantage of it.

How many copies of these do you have?
3" maps are:

Expanded Rules

Base Set Maps (39-45 V2.0)

North Africa

Ummmm and just out of couriosity How many IS-2's do you have;)

Which sets have the larger scale vehicles?

Sorry, I`m sure a noob question, but I`m well a noob to this game...Lol..:D

Making the mighty 88 "dreaded"

12. November 2008 - 16:41
So I played a game against Dora9 last night, 1941, Barbarossa GE vs. SU, 150 points and ran into a steel wall of T-34s. Expecting this, I brought two 88 flak guns with their great AT dice and a truck to cart one around. My plan was to put the two on a "crossfire" of overwatch and try to isolate his tanks so that my two Stug IIIs could pick off a tank or two.

Well I ran into the problem I run into every time when I take the 88: overcosted and ignorable with blocking terrain. After the game which I lost handily, we talked about how the 88 just really isn't up to snuff for 19 points. Sure, it has great AT dice, but it's just so expensive for what one often gets out of it.

Here are the main problems:

- Units can ignore an 88, even on overwatch, by skirting around the edges of a map and hiding behind intervening terrain.

- 19 points nearly buys one a whole slew of better German tanks who can move/position themselves for a better shot on enemy vehicles.

- 3/3 defense means that one essentially _must_ take the Romanian lieutenant that gives +1/+1 to artillery when adjacent or take a pillbox (or both). The 88 dies to just about any single shot from any unit in the game.

What is wrong with this situation? The 88 was one of the most feared pieces of equipment in the entire war. It devastated armor in all theaters where it was present, mostly in the wide open spaces of North Africa and the Eastern Front. It was an essential tool against the superior armor of the Soviet Union early in the war, being the only gun with enough penetrating power to stop the mighty T-34 and KV-1 tanks at range.

I feel the gun should be something players want to buy for their forces almost every time! It should make is presence felt in historical scenarios and in friendly games and it should be feared, just like it was in real life.

How to accomplish this? Well, again we talked about solutions and at first we talked about having blind or hidden deployment of AT guns. This would allow an element of surprise for AT guns that's missing from the game at this time. The only problem with this is that the hexes aren't numbered on the maps. Additionally, its probably too "complex" and old-school for game like A&AM. Rather than change the game a whole lot I came up with a simple proposal:

- Give the 88 the Nashorn's ability "Superior Optics".

This is not only historically accurate, but a simple change that allows the 88 to have a better field of fire where it can reach out and truly be feared by opposing armor. It doesn't make it too powerful because it still has lousy defense and gets -1 on cover rolls.

The only problem with this change is that the card is already full of text. Perhaps elminate Anti-Air? I know that flies in the face of the idea that it was originally an AA gun, but something might have to go to make room. Maybe they can just squeeze it on the card.

What do you guys think?

Bunkers ( not pillboxes)

12. November 2008 - 15:26
Although in an ideal world a future bunker unit would get a defense of its own, it wouldn't be in line with fortifications and the way cover works in our beloved game in a wider sense. So I'd like them to be something like this ( landing scenarios in which "pillboxes" forming part of the Atlantic wall's defenses are being knocked out by riflemen firing at medium range and then failing your cover roll, somehow bothers me..... ):

Bunker:

Cost: 8

Speed: 0

AI: -/-/-
AV: -/-/-

Heavy fortification:This unit can hold up to two soldier units. Non-artillery soldier units may only attack units in a bunker if they are in the same hex as this unit. They may use their close assault values against (units in) bunkers. Units in bunkers get +1 on cover rolls and +1 defense.

How does this look to you guys? I'd really like to see a unit like this in a future set. Mostly because of the reason mentioned above. I can see the reasoning behind a pillbox representing any type of (makeshift) defense, but I cannot imagine a Omaha beach secnario in which there are no "real" bunkers.....

Through the eyes of Tiger killers

10. November 2008 - 23:09
Here's an excerpt of a battle report from Sledgehammers: Strengths and Flaws of Tiger Tank Battalions in World War II (Aberjona Press, 2004). Colonel Viktor Iskrov of the Soviet Red Army recounts his role in the defense of southern Ukraine against Germany's 9th Panzer Division and Heavy Tank Battalion 506.

Seemed fitting leading up to the release of the Eastern Front set. A great read. Can't recommend this book highly enough.
Fighting in the 116th Guards "Order of Lenin" Artillery Regiment as commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, on September 26, 1943 at the village of Shevchenko we encountered a column of German armor...

I was at the battalion's CP with the commander of the 4th Battery, Senior Lieutenant D.S. Gaidaenko when we spotted a group of German tanks that were advancing toward the battery from the flank. Apparently, they had broken through our infantry defenses and were now going for us. I immediately contacted the regimental commander over the radio and asked for orders. His answer was short, "Act on your own!"

I left the chief of forward observers, Senior Lieutenant M.M. Yakovlev, at the CP, and we (Senior Lieutenant Gaidaenko and I) ran as fast as our feet would carry us to the 4th Battery...In front of us were the advancing German tanks and four ZIS-3 76.2mm field guns of the 4th Battery to stop them. The guns, camouflaged in the hedgerows at Shevchenko, were turned 90 degrees to the right to repel the assault.

Inexperienced or green gun-layers were replaced by experienced officers. I found a place on a hillock behind the battery to have a good view of the battlefield and so that my crews could see me. I told the crews to fire at the tracks and side armor, and ordered them to open fire only on my command, when I waved a small red flag.

Tanks appeared from behind the hills that were in front of us. One of the gun-layers, Sergeant Serdyuk, became unnerved and fired as soon as the tanks appeared on the hilltops. He missed, and the German tanks immediately spotted his gun. It was blasted with a direct hit. We found Sergeant Serdyuk's head lying some 15-20 meters from the gun after the battle. We were all very sorry about his death, but, in fact, he himself was to blame.

I saw the advancing German tanks very well. As soon as I saw that they started turning a little bit, exposing their side armor to us, I waved the small red flag, which served as a command for opening fire. After this, each individual crew fought independently. It was a real duel against the German armor. We knocked out four of them, including two Tigers. The Germans could not take this and started to retreat. Our losses were also high. Killed in this battle were Senior Lieutenant Semen Markin from Leningrad, platoon leader Lieutenant Vladimir Kolymagin, Sergeant Serdyuk, and ten privates and sergeants.

Markin was killed when the German tanks started to retreat and his 6th Battery opened fire on them, knocking out two tanks. The German tanks were returning fire as they retreated. An armor-piercing shell killed Markin at the firing position. The solid steel shell tore his body into two parts...

Soon after the end of the engagement I received a message that General Major Russiyanov was about to visit our battery...

When he saw the nightmare at our positions after the battle — wounded screaming, dead lying right at the guns, some crew members torn apart by direct hits — General Russiyanov took off his cap, took a deep bow and, with tears in his eyes, said, "Eternal memory and glory be with the defenders of our Fatherland!" I, as battalion commander, tried to maintain military formalities, salute the general, and make an official report, but my nerves were so shaken by the battle that I did not succeed. Russiyanov, in turn, did not require any military ceremony at that moment. Right on the spot, on the battlefield, he handed Senior Lieutenant Gaidaenko and me medals, Orders of the Red Banner, and ordered me to recommend all the men of the 4th Battery for decorations.

Has anyone played it like this?

9. November 2008 - 3:52
Okay, so according to the rules, 1 tank miniature = 1 tank, and one infantry miniature = 1 infantry squad. Has anyone tried to play with 1 infantry miniature = 1 infantry soldier (squad = 7 to 10 miniatures)? I know it requires a hell of a lot of miniatures but has anyone tried it and had success?

Question on Brush terrain - HELP!

7. November 2008 - 4:25
IIRC, brush blocks line of sight and gives cover to soldiers but not vehicles. It doesn't affect vehicle movement. Is this correct?

I'm about to start a game and don't have the cover to the desert mapbook!

have you pre-ordered your Eastern Front cases yet?

6. November 2008 - 2:14
I don't really need anything, so as a Christmas gift suggestion I asked for some booster cases of Eastern Front... It'll kill me to have to wait that extra week and a half, but oh well, my dad ordered me 3 cases. I'll probably end up buying a few boosters on launch to tide me over :P

180 pieces I'll have to find space for... ouch... I just hope I manage to get at least 1 of everything, otherwise I'll be kind of irritated.
