[tried] Any news for WOTDQ betaCards

19. November 2008 - 19:24
I do remember you saying you might be able to see if you could get the beta Statscards out for Dec ....
Have you had any luck getting wotc to release them next month?

I dont think they will get the betacards out by then... But who knows maybe they could?

Black Dragon Lurker

19. November 2008 - 16:21
This piece seems pretty powerful. Does anyone else think that the BDL seems to be a rather powerful piece? Let me explain and then people can give their opinions. Here is its stats:

Name: Black Dragon Lurker
Alignment: Evil
Factions: Underdark
Points: 32
Level: 4
AC: 22
DEF: 20
Speed: F7
HP: 50
Attacks:
{MB} Bite +12 vs AC; 10 Damage
[] {C} Corrosive Breath (Large cone) +10 vs DEF (Ref); 30 acid Damage, 15 acid on miss. RECHARGE when first Bloodied.
Abilities:
Evil - Dragon - Reach 2 - Resist 5 Acid
Special Abilities:
Darkness: Replaces attack action; recharge corrosive breath AND this creature cannot be the target of {R} attacks until the end of its next turn.
Champion 2
- Use at the start of the round. Spend 10 VP. Until end of round, all acid Damage is increased by +15.
- Use before taking your first turn of a round. The player whose warband eliminates more enmies than any other this round scores +10 VP.

Ok, so now that this is done, here is why I think this is powerful:

First off, stats are pretty good (except maybe HP). AC is a little low, but DEF is great, F7 is great, and level is extremely low.

Second, the breath weapon is AMAZING. Its a large cone (rather than a line, like it used to be) which makes it really easy to hit EVERYTHING. This, of course, means your own stuff. But that's ok, just use Acid resistant / immune allies or use your really nice fly speed to get where ya need to. 30 damage is amazing, but its not going to hit that much with only a +10 for the AB. But that's ok, being able to claim a minimum of 15 acid damage is really nice too.

The second thing that makes it great is the Darkness ability, which to me makes the whole package awesome. You skip an attack action, and until the end of its next turn, he is immune to ranged attacks (though not the other 3 types) AND recharges his breath weapon. What's better, there is no limit to how many darknesses you can use over a game. Which means, if nothing else, that every other turn or so, you are going to be able to unleash an automatic 15 acid cone that has a potential to do 30 (or even 60 with a crit). That seems amazing to me for only 32 points.

Then, just to top it off, he's a champion 2 (which is aslo amazing for only 32 points) and his first ability can be extremely awesome. All acid damage goes up by 15? Wow.

I may be overlooking something here, and I haven't gotten to playtest it or anything, but at first glance this unit seems really, really powerful.

They've got teeth!

19. November 2008 - 13:30
While I'm officially on permanent leave from this board, after opening my case of Demonweb I felt the irrepressible compulsion to revisit to make it known that I'm really happy with this set :D

The paintjob is a lot better on this set than on the two previous ones. Even the commons show small details like teeth, eyes and pupils.

There are still some sculpts that I didn't like (Crazed Kuo-Toa, Troglodytes) but the fault's probably as much 4E's reimagining of these creatures as the sculpting itself.

For those interested in these things, my rares were:
01/60 Dragonborn Paladin
07/60 Rakshasa Assassin
09/60 Bearded Devil
16/60 Solamith
24/60 Black Dragon
25/60 Concord Illithid
40/60 Curse Slaad
41/60 Cyclops
42/60 Ettin
43/60 Minotaur
59/60 Girallon
60/60 Iron Dragon

For the first time, though, the case was one mini short - one Kruthik Adult was missing. One of the boosters had the card and the cleanly cut-off half of a plastic bag still loosely connected to a different mini, but not the mini itself.

It's not so bad, though, since I was going to sell half of the common minis, anyway.

I'm a bit sad about WotC dropping support for DDM but if this set is a harbinger of things to come I'm really looking forward to the new monster sets!

I'd also like to thank the guys behind the DDM Guild for their dedication and willingness to continue where WotC left off. Kudos! :tiphat:

Jhaelen out.

A Use for the Infernal Armor...

19. November 2008 - 10:20
Many people think that the Infernal armor sucks. This is probably because it's a featureless sculpt, is in an awkward post, and has exactly one step. Well, let me tell you that I have found a use for it:

MONOPOLY PIECE

...Actually, this set has some great Monopoly pieces in it. Let the rest of your family fight over who gets to be the shoe. You've got the Scythejaw!

2.0 Tweak Project: Tweaking old minis to make them playable

19. November 2008 - 7:51
Since the guild will be stating cards for 2.0 going forward for the new RPG minis (let's hope), and we have the older 1.0 sets being re-stated for 2.0 I thought about current 2.0 minis that just need a few tweaks to make them playable that are otherwise not being used. Ever. This is another way to add to our mini arsenal since WOTC is abandoning skirmish- we can updatie minis we currently have and breathe new life into them so that they see action!

The idea:
-Pick 1 mini you think needs a little tweaking/adjustment, and give it new stats that you think are better and more reflective of that minis cost.
- The idea is not to revamp the stats completely. The essence of the miniature must remain intact.
-Remember not every mini to be re-stated is to be an uber-broken piece: we are not trying to create an "All Star" set of stats. We want to avoid making mini "undercosted" as well!
-Try to pick a mini that really needs help. One that never sees play because it is very overcosted is an example.
-Play test it! See how it does in a game: this is a great way to see how your re-stats have worked out for your pick.

My Pick:
Ascendant Hellsword:
Increased his AC to 28, DEF to 26 to be more reflective of a figure of this cost
Increased Two-bladed sword to +18, Infernal slash to +16
Added Reach 2
New Special Power: Devil's Rejects. Devil's need more synergy, so having a champion that can boost his allies is important IMO.
Removed VP champion ability

Special Thanks:

19. November 2008 - 5:57
I want to thank Wizards of the Coast for the following:

The Mezzodemon is durable.

The Mezzodemon will not break if I look at it.

The Mezzodemon's spear does not disintegrate.

Thank you, Wizards. Thank you.

Demonweb Paint Quality

19. November 2008 - 3:01
I know people talk about how quality of miniatures has dropped of late but just take a look at Harbringer through Archfiends. Pretty suck-E. Even aberrations and Giants of Legend was a bit low par but they were on the right track. Deathknell through War of the Dragon Queen were better but the miniature line reached a high point between Blood War and Desert of Desolation.

I do agree that the quality of Dungeons of Dread and Against the Giants was not as great but they both far surpassed Harbringer though Archfiends and perhaps even Aberrations and GoL. Demonweb is the best yet though. The quality of even the commons was well done.

I have a feeling that Demonweb is a taste of things to come for you RPGers out there. Your miniatures are going to look a lot better!

Demonweb Rare Distribution

19. November 2008 - 2:53
I opened up my usual four cases of miniatures and got the entire set. The only other time this happened was with Dungeons of Dread. Even four cases of Harbringer I was missing one!

I got two of each rare- one case had one each of the dragons in it!
Except for 1 Dragonborn Paladin, Solamith and the Yuan-Ti Malison Incanter. I also got 3 Autumn Wind Rangers, 3 Drow Demonbinders and 3 Draegloth Favored Ones.

Favorite Miniature- Vicious Bearded Devil (way better than the Harbringer one).
Least Favorite- Infernal Amor (this one is actually the only one I do not like).

Quick and inexpensive terrain

19. November 2008 - 0:51
Hi all,

I had some odds and ends laying around and decided to try and make some terrain. The images are Sblocked for your convenience. ;)

Spoiler:

Here are the items I used:
Quote: "The Caverns"
(2) cans of spray foam insulation
(2) 12x24x.25" plywood
(1) Pkg of kite string
(1) Stencil brush
(1) Bottle Elmer's glue
(1) Exacto knife
Various apple barrel acrylic paints I cut 1" niches along the edges of the plywood, set the string in the niches, and then strecthed it across the plywood. I then smeared the surface with glue to set the string in place. I then let it dry. I could have just drawn on the grid, but I liked the feel of it being 3-dimensional.

I then drybrushed the plywood to make it look like a cavern floor and let it dry.

I then sprayed the spray foam insulation and expiremented with it a bit to try and get "natural looking" formations. After it dried, I then cut away at the foam to give it some shape and to get rid of some of the unwanted bits.

I then dry brushed the spray foam and layered it in different colors of paint.

Image contained in the Sblock.

Spoiler:

Quote: The Hill
Newspaper
Plaster of Paris mix
Rock mold (from craft store)
Masking tape
Gravel & grass (from craft store)
Some gauze with plaster (from craft store) For the hill terrain, I had to go to the hobby store, but I only spent about $15. So, I formed small wads of paper using the newspaper. I then taped them into place on the foam core. Then I got the gauze strips wet and placed them over the wads of paper. That was the basis of the hill.

Then I mixed plaster of paris and set it into the rock molds I bought from the craft store. When they dried, I set them into flat areas on the "plastered hit" and glued them into place.

I then painted the surface and added rocks, grass, and bushes.

I was pretty happy with the paint job on the caverns. It doesn't really translate well in the photo (my wife used the flash and over-exposed the picture), but in person it looks very "underdarkish." There are some spots where I need to go and touch up the carverns because I couldn't get into the creases very well, but that won't be too hard.

The hill terrain paint job is better in person than in the photo, but it still sucks. I am not an artist. Anway, I hope this helps people who are interested in fairly cheap, homemade terrain.

Question about availability outside the U.S. - China?

18. November 2008 - 20:33
Maybe someone from Wizard's can answer this... are the minis available for sale in China, considering they are made there?

Are they cheaper?

A relative of mine goes to China often and I was wondering if I should send him on a minis hunt... :)

I feel sorry

18. November 2008 - 15:19
Ya know i really do feel sorry for the ddm players. I myself do not play but i have bought several packs of minis for my table top rpg game. Even though i have always said i would like some non random minis i never wanted to see the ddm line really go. It's kinda sad to see it go. Some of the minis i really never did use some i plan to in the future. Where else am i going to get a aspect of tiamat mini (one of the few packs of minis i actually got all useful minis) In all seriousness i want all of you ddm players to know i am really sorry that this has happened to you.

"Nearest" attacks when no-one is seen?

18. November 2008 - 13:51
I red the comprehensive rules, and got no straight answer there, but tend to think that the rules say that you can target nearest area attacks freely if no enemies are in sight.
Other point of view says that nearest attacks can't be made at all if no targets are seen.

Do you have rulings for this?

Sorry if this is frequent question, but it is important to me and I am now in great hurry.

Demonweb Stat Cards?

18. November 2008 - 5:16
I know in the past the stat cards for skirmish are online before the boosters go on sale to the general public, not seeing them as of now, so I was just curious if I'm missing them or if the release date has been pushed back again (last I heard it was tomorrow) or if Wizards has totally decided to not put them onine? Info much appreciated!
